The Picturesque Village of Matala
Matala is a small village located on the southern coast of Crete, about 70 kilometers southwest of Heraklion. It is a popular tourist destination, especially known for its beautiful beach and the famous “Matala caves”.
History
Matala has a long history and was inhabited since the Neolithic era. It became important during the Minoan period and the Roman occupation of Crete. The Matala caves were used as tombs by the Romans and later inhabited by hippies in the 1960s. Matala was then a popular destination for backpackers and hippies. Joni Mitchell’s famous song “Carey” was inspired by her time living in the Matala caves.
Scenery and Landscape
The main highlight of Matala is its beautiful crescent beach with clear blue waters and the striking Matala caves which contain man-made chambers cut into the soft rock. Matala is surrounded by lush greenery, with tamarisk and oleander trees along the beach. Behind the beach are the famous Matala caves set into the cliff. The picturesque village has a scenic port, whitewashed houses and lovely beach tavernas along the promenade.
